Thor Tuscany 40DX Description
The 2016 Thor Tuscany 40DX was the first year for the ZF independent Front Suspension (IFS) and the V-Ride Freightliner Chassis. This Chassis was the last significant mechanical change in this and similar models up to today. Whether it’s a 2016 or 2022, it’s the same state of the art chassis. Diesel Engine power is also the same, a Cummins 8.9L inline six cylinder developing 450 hp and 1250-foot pounds of torque connected to an Allison 3000, six-speed transmission. It will pull step grades easily passing big rig trucks while even pulling a towed vehicle which is impossible to feel while towing. And, it easily cruises down the highway at the speed limit even when the speed limit is 80 mph and at 70-73 mph it will return about 10-10.5 mpg. With 150 gallons of fuel, fillable from either side (left or right) your range is that of some airliners and the two bathrooms are much nicer than any airliner as is the galley.
IFS rides, handles, steers and drives better than any solid front axle coach which inhabit so much of the Tuscany’s competition. With a 60-degree turning cut it also is much more maneuverable in tight spaces, something you will appreciate, if you have driven a solid axle coach. It almost can pivot left or right on its rear wheels. The smooth ride comes from the air ride suspension.
Basement storage is the size of a small garage and the interior is extremely comfortable and luxurious. The durable leather like material inside is thick and soft with a three-place sofa, two reclining theater chairs opposite plus a sublime four place dinette. Bored is an impossibility as this Thor has four large flat screen TVs including one 32 incher outside. All connect to the DVD and there is a Dish satellite dish on the roof that automatically finds the satellite. Of course, there is a cable plug in for a campground.
The two Captain’s chairs for the pilot and co-pilot are full power with a powered leg rest for the passenger. And they rotate into the living area for additional sublime seating.
Hungry is never an issue with a huge pantry, residential French door refrigerator with a giant bottom freezer, convection microwave and induction cooktop. It has cold water in the door and ice anyway you like it.
When you get tired, the rear bedroom’s king-size bed will have you asleep in a nano second and the Sofa converts into a queen-size air bed. Falling asleep on the sofa while reading a book can also be problem only to be woken up when the book hits the luxurious tile floor.
The shower is large and hot with instant and endless hot water and the closets are even bigger having a full width unit across the rear of the coach.
This coach has no propane, a great safety feature and three air-conditioners (One for each area of the coach) kept us cool during those 110-degree days when camping.
Tires are nearly brand new installed in July this year. The coach has a total of 25,201 miles. The original tires had plenty of rubber, they just aged out with cracking.
